1. Car: Flexibility with Traffic Delays

Driving is the most flexible option, allowing you to leave whenever you’re ready. The I-95 North route is the quickest path to NYC, but keep in mind that traffic can be heavy, especially near major cities like Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Newark. If you choose to drive, it's best to plan your trip early in the morning or late at night to avoid the bulk of traffic.

Estimated Drive Time: 4-5 hours, depending on traffic.

2. Amtrak: Comfortable and Efficient, but Pricier

For a more comfortable and reliable option, Amtrak is a top choice for getting to NYC from D.C. Union Station, just a short Metro ride from College Park. Amtrak offers two great services:

  • Northeast Regional Line: This is the more affordable option compared to the Acela Express. It’s comfortable with free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and spacious seating for you to relax or catch up on work.
  • Acela Express: If you're in a hurry, Acela is the faster option, cutting the travel time to under 3 hours. The premium service includes more luxurious seating and faster travel, but it does come at a higher price.

Ticket Prices: High rates that typically rise during the holiday season.

Estimated Travel Time: 2 hours and 45 minutes on Acela, 3-4 hours on the Northeast Regional.

3. TripperBus: Affordable, Comfortable, and Student-Friendly

For UMD students looking to travel on a budget, TripperBus offers an excellent option. TripperBus picks up passengers at Greenbelt Metro Station, which is conveniently located outside of D.C. traffic. This means you can avoid the congestion of downtown D.C., making your trip faster and less stressful. TripperBus is known for its Wi-Fi, power outlets, and comfortable reclining seats, which are perfect for catching up on schoolwork or relaxing during the trip. TripperBus drops you off in Midtown Manhattan, which is very convenient for getting around NYC and connecting to other public transportation.

  • Price: starts at $25, making it one of the most affordable options.

Estimated Travel Time: 4-5 hours, depending on traffic.

For a premium experience, opt for the LUX bus, which provides extra legroom and oversized seats. Buses depart daily from Dupont Circle in D.C., and drop off at three convenient locations in New York City: Penn Station, Lower Manhattan (Chinatown), and Brooklyn. You can also book your return trip for a seamless journey back.

Ticket Prices: Starting from $39 each wayEstimated Travel Time: 4–5 hours (depending on traffic)Pro Tip: Book early to secure your seat, especially during peak travel periods!

5. Greyhound: Affordable, but Less Comfortable

While Greyhound is another budget-friendly option, it lacks many of the amenities that make TripperBus so popular among students. Greyhound also picks you up at Greenbelt Metro Station and takes you directly to New York City’s Port Authority Bus Terminal, but the trip can be less comfortable. Greyhound buses offer fewer amenities compared to TripperBus, with limited Wi-Fi and no power outlets on many of its buses.

  • Price: typically higher prices, especially around the holidays.

Estimated Travel Time: 4-5 hours, depending on traffic.

Tips for a Smooth Trip
  • Book Early for the Best Prices: Tickets for all these options are cheaper when booked in advance, so plan ahead to save money.
  • Check for Student Discounts: Amtrak and some bus services like Greyhound may offer student discounts. It’s always worth checking before you book.
  • Pack for Comfort: Bring snacks, a cozy sweater, headphones, and any study materials for your journey.

From the student-friendly TripperBus and affordable Greyhound to the faster but pricier Amtrak, UMD students have several solid options for traveling from College Park to NYC. Whether you’re on a budget or in need of a faster, more comfortable ride, there’s a perfect choice for everyone. Safe travels, Terps!
